Risk Assessment - Training
CE Marking - PUWER

Laidler Associates Consulting Service
At Laidler Associates, we are often asked the question why a company who is buying machinery, needs to worry about CE Marking. The CE Marking is dealt with by the machinery manufacturer or supplier so in theory the end user should just need to check that the machine carries CE Marking.

The HSE take a different view however. In their guidance leaflet, 'Buying New Machinery' the following statements are made:

'The manufacturer is claiming that the machinery complies with the law. You still need to check the machine is safe before it is used'.

'Remember, never assume that machinery is safe just because it has CE Marking'

Two checklists are also included which give examples of what to ask a supplier (or manufacturer) of machinery and what to do when you have bought new machinery.

Approximately one year ago, HSE decided to target manufacturing to reduce the unacceptabley high number of fatal and serious injuries that continue to occur in manufacturing industries. The campaign aims to:

raise awareness about the risks and standards required for safe isolation and lock off;

ensure, through formal enforcement, that robust isolation and lock off procedures are implemented; and

ensure that employers have, or put in place, sound risk control systems for managing these procedures.

A checklist was produced for this campaign which we have combined with the checklists from 'Buying New Machinery'. To receive a copy, complete the online form.
