As part off the HSE’s revitalising strategy, Workplace Transport is one of the key issues in current health and safety. It is the second biggest cause of fatal accidents in British workplaces, even though the vast majority of these accidents are preventable.

According to the HSE, most transport related accidents involve people bring hit or run over by moving vehicles, people falling from vehicles or being struck by objects falling from vehicles. The underlying causes are usually found in poor management control such as failing to provide safe systems of work and too little information or training.

Assessing an entire site can be broken down into the following sections:

  • The workplace ie the layout of routes.
  • The Vehicles ie that vehicles are safe and suitable for work.
  • Drivers and other employees ie Check what your drivers actually do when undertaking their work activities.
  • Vehicle activities ie check that reversing manoeuvres are kept to a minimum.

Employers should try to identify the hazards associated with vehicle activities and assess whether existing precautions are adequate

Laidler Associates can now offer a site survey service, assessing a workplace to criteria laid down as part of the Revitalising strategy.
