Following a survey of CNC Turning machines carried out by HSE inspectors during 2002/03, HSE are warning of serious or fatal injuries on turning machines as guards are not being properly maintained. Parts such as vision panels can deteriorate over time due to the effects of metalworking fluids which can reduce their impact resistance.

“Vision panels constructed of plain, unprotected polycarbonate need to be assessed periodically to ensure they will provide adequate protection against ejected parts” said Nick Hitchcott from the HSE Manufacturing Sector. “This needs to be done even when there is no obvious evidence of damage to the panel. Machines over 2 years old need to be assessed unless they are fitted with a specially manufactured, fully protected laminated vision panel”.

Guidance can be found in EIS 33 ‘CNC Turning Machines - controlling risks from ejected parts’ which can be obtained from HSE Books or downloaded from the HSE website www.hse.gov.uk in the ‘Free Leaflets’ section.

'Safety in Electrical Testing at work’ (INDG 354) provides basic guidance for a workplace where electrical testing is carried out and for those people doing the actual testing. It covers testing in situations where equipment like domestic appliances is being tested.

This leaflet is available from HSE Books or can downloaded from the HSE website.
